MILO® Dairy Free Almond From Tesco Malaysia

16 September, 2021

I walked through the aisle of the promotion section in Lotus (Tesco) as usual, buying groceries to keep me alive. I saw something very different this time: a pack of MILO® Dairy Free Almond.

My first reaction was: “Malaysia is so advanced now!”

Literally.

It might seem like a no-brainer for some people that the dairy industry is harming the Earth. Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt are made from cows in dairy farms. Cows are the least sustainable animals you could have in the backyard. They have four stomachs that actively produce harmful gases in their daily life (Yes, I mean they fart a little too much).

You have learned about how too much carbon dioxide in the air can cause global warming. To give you a context, the exact gas they produce, called methane, is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide, which is so much worse than the carbon dioxide from the exhaust of your car.

Hence, that’s why there are so many innovative alternatives, the Beyond Meat, that make totally vegetarian ground beef; dairy free cheese, sourced from dairy-free milk such as soy. All of them are so much more environmentally friendly and cruelty free (animal welfare is another big topic).

Cow milk and meat has been a huge part of human culture, so were slavery, gender inequality, colonisation, whaling… (don’t even mention about dog meat festival in Yulin).

So I hope you see my point there, just because “it’s how it works”, it doesn’t justify that “it’s how it should be done.”

Calling out all the Earth citizens there, let’s do our part and be a responsible Rakyat!

In the end, I didn’t buy the MILO® Dairy Free Almond, but it inspired me to write this snippet of message at the checkout.
